Chapter 7
Blacks Are Important
Over the past few years we have seen various pictures in the media of law enforcement shootings and in most cases they result in the murder of an unarmed African American man or woman. The police officers responsible are yet to be held to account. Most of the episodes have included white policemen slaughtering African American men and of course all blacks are important human beings. We’ve all observed cell phones and body cam footages of unarmed black men with their hands raised in surrender but are still shot and murdered by police. Now, the recognizable and existential danger that dark individuals persevere — the one that prompts us to have “the conversation” with our kids — is colliding with a modern existential threat.
When black men report (and record) being stalked by a police officer and beaten, some hit in the face, we see once more see that the rules are not adhered to in the black community. If the high level of aberration confronting communities of color is not addressed, this annihilation will continue destroying bodies, battering lives and breaking communities. All Lives Matter may be one’s individual position, but until this nation values all lives similarly, it is both sensible and in fact essential to highlight the lives it appears to esteem less.” When I say blacks are important, it is because in this country there is an inclination to say something else. Racial discrimination influences all minority groups but police brutality, at such over the top rates, does not. A black person is murdered extrajudicially every 28 hours.
